What We Are Studying

  • How BREASTChoice can become part of routine care
  • How BREASTChoice can be used with patients and clinicians together through a summary in patients’ electronic health record
  • How to improve BREASTChoice based on stakeholder input and usability testing
  • How effective an updated version of BREASTChoice is compared to a control website
  • The long-term goal of this research is to improve the quality of care for patients considering breast reconstruction after mastectomy.

What we are testing

In the study, patients who consent will be assigned to one of two groups.

  1.  BREASTChoice
    1. Patients will:
      1. Learn about different reconstruction options
      1. Learn about their personal risks from reconstruction
      1. View photos of women after having reconstruction
      1. Answer questions about their preferences
    1. The tool creates a summary of the patient’s risks and preferences to send to a clinician.
    1. We plan to deliver and test the tool in a multi-site randomized trial (with academic and community sites in two different regions in the U.S.)
  • Control Website
    • Patients will see a website developed by a national organization. It includes:
      • Information about types of breast reconstruction
      • Links to additional resources
      • Images and content that are similar to usual care in many places
